The recent resignation of Omaha Northwest head football coach Jerry Shank has led many to speculate that Damon Benning may be the leading candidate to fill the post at his alma matter.

Anonymous sources claim that Benning was first approached about the Northwest head coaching  job two years ago, but other commitments prevented him from seriously pursuing the position; subsequently, Shank was hired. However, two seasons have passed and conditions and experiences have moved Benning to another plateau in his life.

The former standout Nebraska Cornhusker running back now has three solid and very productive years under his belt as an assistant coach for the Omaha Burke Bulldogs. As a parent of a Burke student/athlete:

“Let there be no doubt that Damon Benning played a—major role—in the successful rebirth of a Burke football program that went from 1-8 in his first year to  7-3 in his third year and two consecutive playoff appearances.”

Moreover, listening to Benning during the Husker football season giving one of his weekly Damon Benning Breakdown’s on 1620 The Zone radio station, you know that he knows the game of football.  But what makes Benning even more appealing as a coach is his ability to effectively communicate his knowledge and passion to teach and to motivate young high school players.

Finally, when you add to all that Damon Benning brings to the table, his aptitude for successfully navigating his way through the myriad of off-the-field issues that inundate student/athletes and their parents and families’ lives—then you have a very special candidate to consider.

Benning would be a huge loss for the Burke football program, but the young and energetic and well-connected former Northwest star may be the best hope to rejuvenate the Huskies program.
