By Will Cummings
my Hit

On Wednesday, January 14th, my Hit will present the Top 25 Nebraska High School Basketball Prospects as compiled by our basketball point person, Thomas Liechti, who is better known as Action Force.

Liechti is an Omaha Burke student and avid sports junkie who is very active in youth basketball as a coach and a ravenous spectator.  He has thus far provided very admirable analysis, reporting and commentary to my Hit’s basketball coverage.

The ranking list will feature the top twenty five high school basketball prospects in the state regardless of  their graduation year.

Below is the latest weekly instalment of Action Force’s Top Ten Nebraska High School Basketball Teams:

Action Force’s Top 10

Nebraska High School Basketball Teams
(week ending January 11, 2009)basketball-dunking_09547096

Rank, Team, Record, Last Week’s Rank

1. Omaha Bryan (9-2) 5

Coach Tim Cannon’s team is now finding the chemistry I’ve been talking about.I believed in the off-season they were the top team on paper and they are starting to look like it. A very well coached squad, great floor leader and ball handler in sophomore Galen Gullie and Tiit Kuek and junior Ben Imigare key players at the guard spots, Soph Dk Agustineis a great p layer underneath for an already deep team in the front court with Kerwin and Reng. The addition of transfers Tariir Gatouch and Reith Jeich will only make the Bears better…

2. Lincoln Southeast (7-2) 1

A team that was expected to be a top 10 team all along is playing well together, Sophomore Derrius Vick a very dynamic player is having a good season thus far, Senior Matt Hagerbaumen is also having a very productive senior season

3. Lincoln Southwest (9-2).2

The Silverhawks split with arch rival Southeast and earned their first victory over Southeast in school history en route to the HAC tourney title, but they’ve also lost to Southeast once before this year. With players like Drew Edmondand Jordan Tyrance the Silverhawks are a healthy pick to make a run for a state title.

4. Omaha Central (7-1) 3

The eagles only loss on the season was a 1 pt loss to the Burke bulldogs at At the Holiday tourney the Eagles needed overtime to defeat Millard South, who only has 2 wins, but the Eagles hold wins over Prep, Millard West and a split with Burke, Central has plenty of depth to go with their stars led by Deverell Biggs, Paul Simms is starting to come on for the Eagles in scoring 19 in the win over Prep.

5. Bellevue East (7-4) 7

The Chieftains are led by All Nebraska center Jarell Crayton.  Players like Joel Butts, Evan Williams and Tyson Reeveshave helped take a load off of Crayton.

6. Creighton Prep (7-3) 4

The consensus number one pick to start the season, the Jr. Jays have been hurt by injuries: no Alex Hookand no UNO recruit John Karhoff, but the Jays are still dangerous, Stormberg is one of the best shooters in the Metro and Caleb Steffensmeir is a very good ball handler who sometimes gets overlooked by the superior ball handlers in the class of 20011.

7. Omaha Burke (5-4) 6

The Bulldogs’ 4 losses have come from teams ranked in the top 6, losing twice (once by one pt) to Bryan and a splitting 2 games with the Eagles and a loss to Prep in game one. The Bulldogs have a lot of potential, Simonds, Davis, Hill, and McGaugh are a four very good players. It’s just getting good play off the bench and good continuity that the Bulldogs need to improve their chances of going deep into the state playoffs.

8. Omaha Benson (5-3) NR

Coach Cerveny’s Bunnies are starting to hit their stride, with guards galore. The Bunnies are doing a good job of running the floor and Stevelle Burns is one of the best players in the state and sophomore Cj Carter is is really starting to show what he can do. Cal McCoy and Avery Langford will both need to play well down the stretch to keep the Bunnies in contention for a run at a state title.

9. Millard West (5-3) NR

The Wildcats are team with lots of continuity, a team that can catch any team off guard on any given night, Kyle Iske and Ryan Longacre in the front court are good along with Tyler Neiderklein, and Zach Leinbaugh in the back court.

10. Lincoln East (6-4) 8

The Spartans have played a tough schedule to this point and they go as Drew Sankey goes.

Contenders: Bellevue West, Norfolk and Lincoln Northeast
