#7 Grand Island (6-3)  VS  #10 Lincoln Southwest (5-4)

Game 7

This is one of four rematches to be played in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Islanders won the regular season bout 28-14. But they better not go into this game over confident as Lincoln Southwest has improved since they last met Grand Island in the fourth game of the season.

 

The Silver Hawks  dual threat QB Rylan Cotton seems to be coming into his own and the defense is also showing signs of improvement.

 

The good news for the Islanders is their 1,000 yard rusher Curtis Hudiburgh and home field advantage.   This game is a tossup.

The Islanders will be leaning heavily on RB Curtis Hudiburgh to carry them to victory, as well as WR Nathaniel  Zook, while QB Logan Almond controls the offense. On defense the Islanders must look to contain Cotton both on the ground and in the air. So they will need to keep an eye on his favorite target Tompkins. Rylan Cotton looms big in this contest. As he goes so too will the Silver Hawks. Fortunately,  he will have a lot of help behind him from RBs Jeff Seybold and Grant Peterson. In addition, Cotton can also turn to Ethan Tompkins, who is one of the best pass catching TEs in Nebraska. The Silver Hawks’ defense must stop  Hudiburgh on the ground and watch for the Almond to Zook hookup through the air.

Last but not least: Game eight features Hit News’ No. 1 rated Creighton Jr. Jays, who have led our poll from preseason through the end of regular season. They should continue–barring any miracle bestowed upon Fremont–to hold the No. 1 spot after this game. But this should be the last game this year that the Junior Jays will not have to play at their absolute best for the full 60 minutes or more.

The Tigers can only hope to catch Prep on an awfully bad day and at the same time they must play their best ball of the year.Perhaps head coach Kevin Meyer and/or a member of his staff can come up with some inspiring pregame speech that will lead his team to greatness. Alex Hook just needs to do what he has been doing all season–run the offense to win games. He has some great options at his disposal–his own feet and arm or by handing it off to JR RB phenom Nick Mizaur or SR Brad Heldt. And with blocking from  huge  D-1 prospects Jon Lechner, Scott Criss and Jeff Uher he should be successful with any option he chooses.The Junior Jays defense may be the best in the state. Not only do they have a great d-line they also have a very fine defensive backfield led by pick artist Jake Efferding.
