Skills & Attributes: Good size, very good balance, good strength, good pad level, good feet, and good hands.

Analysis: Like most of the top HS OL prospects, we have yet to see what Lechner can really do. The fact is: “Big athletes take a little longer time to fully blossom.” However, Lechner certainly possesses all the skills and attributes and potential necessary to rank him among the top HS linemen prospects in the nation. At this stage in his development, he is more suited for a run oriented type of offensive attack, as he is often quick and explosive coming off the snap, while he  demonstrates the ability to control and to drive his opponents off the line. Lechner is also nimble enough to lead, pull, block in the open field, and to pick up blitzes, which may make him more suited to play OG at the next level. Lechner has the athletic potential to also line up at the left tackle spot, but he will need to work on his hand placement and hand speed to control top DE rushers.

Skills & Attributes:  Very good speed, explosive, good first step, quick feet and hands, very athletic, very good toughness, high football IQ.

Analysis: Sellers has the speed, quickness and athleticism to develop into a very good D-1 rush end. In addition, he also seems to display a good football IQ and the proven toughness that could see his talents put to use at the weakside LB spot or even at the safety position.

Sellers is more of a finesse DE who is very adept at using his quick feet and hands to get by bigger defenders on his way to the QB. But Sellers also demonstrates good leverage and decent pad level along with the ability to hold his ground and to easily shed bigger opponents at the HS level. However, at the next level, he will need to develop considerably more size and strength to be an effective every down DE or a weakside LB, who can stop the run.

Skills & Attributes: Great hips, very explosive, very good acceleration, very good toughness, plays violently, quick feet, plays with very good leverage and pad level, high football IQ.

Analysis: Zimmerer’s stock has risen faster than any Class of 2009 recruit due to the hard work he put in during the off season and through his remarkable performance on the field this year. He has an astonishing 10. 6 yard per carry average while accounting for over 1,200 total yards rushing from the FB position—Whew! From his stance to his brutal blocking and tough explosive and–at times –surprisingly shifty running style, this kid has all the markings of the great classic FBs of the past.

ESPN has Zimmerer rated the 12thbest FB in the nation and it is easy to see why when you watch him play on film. He is a very good blocker who exhibits excellent pad level, accuracy and explosiveness when delivering blocks. And when Zimmerer is running he exhibits very good leg drive and is violent upon contact, which accounts for a lot of YAC (yards after contact).  He is also quick-footed and fleet enough to elude and to run by tacklers in the open field.

It’s all is his hips! Your feet may lead but it’s the vertical, horizontal, and rotational position of the hips that enables a player to deliver effective blows or to effectively absorb punishing hits, or to explosively accelerate out of cuts–Zimmerer has great hip action!

4.

Skills & Attributes: Size, excellent athleticism, very good vertical, good strength, good hands, good football IQ, potential difference maker.

Analysis: Amongst all the  prospects in the Nebraska HS class of 2009, Tostenson has the most potential for greatness. However, injury has limited his ability to demonstrate his true potential on the field. Therefore, though we consider Tostenson to be the top Nebraska  HS Class of 2009 prospect with the most ability to excel at the next level –injury limitations have contributed to a current level of play that prevents us from making him Hit News’ No. 1 prospect. Furthermore, WR may not be Tostenson’s best opportunity for—greatness–at the next level.  His height, frame, speed and athleticism are an ideal combo for bulking up into a devastatingly good TE.  Fortunately for the gifted Tostenson no matter what position he ultimately plays, once he recovers fully from his injury—the sky is the limit!

Skills & Attributes: Very good balance, very good strength, good feet, good hands,  good athleticism, good football IQ

Analysis: Pensick plays with very good balance and leverage and at times flashes the ability to be explosive on contact. He is a good tackler and appears to have a good feel for the game with his ability to anticipate ball movement and to read blockers.

At his current skill level he is more  likely to be a two-gap  type DT in a 4-3 scheme or a nose tackle in a 3-4 defense–to play either he will have to bulk up considerably. However, it is still unclear at this stage whether or not this talented athlete (Lincoln Metro heavyweight wrestling champ and reigning State shot-put champ will end up on offense or defense.

6.

Skills & Attributes: Excellent balance, very good hands, good feet, good strength.

Analysis: Davis is one of the best pass blocking O-line prospects in the country. His excellent balance, quick feet and fast and accurate hand thrust allow him to control the best of rushers.   Due to his current height, Davis will most likely play OG at the next level. Therefore, on running plays, he will have to do some work on becoming more explosive and moving his body quicker into position at the point of contact in order to neutralize D-1 DT”s that will be as large or larger than him.

7.

Eric Koehlmoos

2 Star,

5.2,

NR

Skills & Attributes: Athleticism, high football IQ, acceleration,  versatility, very good explosiveness, violent

Analysis: Koehlmoos is a gifted athlete that plays very well on both sides of the ball. SF is most likely Koehlmoos’ projected position at the D-1 level. But he is a truly gifted athlete that can play a variety of different positions on both sides of the ball.

As a DB, Koehlmoos is very good at reacting to and making a play on the ball when in the air. He is an explosive player who is often violent at the point of contact–he has the ability to punish a runner. Koehlmoos also demonstrates good range and adequate closing speed and the ability to make tackles in the open field.

Oops! Millard West Is Best Team In Class A

Posted on November 8, 2008. Filed under: High School Football, Polls:Open—Vote | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

By Will Cummings
Hit News @ Hit Highlights

Poll: At the bottom of article, pick the two winners of the Nebraska Class A football playoff semifinals.

Oops!

I normally stay away from predicting  the outcomes of high school playoff games; nevertheless, I took a stab (a real bad stab)  at the Bellevue West vs. Millard West game.  I ah brilliantly surmised that Tyler Seals and Greg Hardin somehow possessed enough magic to smite the mighty Wildcats into their first loss of the season. I guess I was just too caught up in the moment of their great careers and their outstanding performances in the opening round of the playoffs.

I proclaimed the upset despite knowing that passing teams and cold windy weather don’t mix,  and even after admitting that Millard West had the better team (but not by much).

Boy was I wrong! Reminder to self: Stick to logic and throw out the sentiment when predicting games.

In Friday night’s bitterly cold and windy conditions, the Wildcats managed to produce 42 points and just over 400 total yards of offense, while at the same time holding the T-Birds to just 7 points and 107 total yards, and allowing only one five yard Seals to Hardin completion.  That’s dominance!

Trench Warfare: Grand Island VS Creighton Prep

While the Millard West Wildcats were busily chewing on some frozen Bellevue Bird, I was at Burke stadium freezing my arse off–watching the dramatic (ha) 7-0 Creighton Prep victory over Grand Island.

The score remained 0 – 0 until the fourth 4th qtr. There was not much action in this game unless you like to watch good trench warfare–and I do. Better yet,  Creighton Prep has several of the best linemen in the state in Jon Lechner, Jeff Uher and Scott Criss.  However, neither Grand Island nor Creighton Prep’s linemen could claim domination in the trenches, until midway through the 4th qtr., when Prep seemed to be getting the better movement.

Though Junior RB Nick Mizaur would often slam through the line for four and five yard pops, it was a couple of key runs by senior RB Brad Heldt and senior QB Alex Hook that would finally break the game in Prep’s favor–the one that set up Heldt’s TD was the game’s longest run by Hook–a beautifully timed and executed naked bootleg that went for over twenty some yards.

The Junior Jays’ offense managed only seven points against a very stubborn Grand Island defense, but it was enough for them to remain unbeaten and to keep their state title hopes alive.

The underlying story in Preps’ playoff run is their outstanding defense, which has two consecutive shutouts (three in a row counting the last regular season game) in the playoffs, adding to a grand total of 5 shutouts for the season.

Head coach Tom Jaworski team’s outstanding defensive performance is a function of some good Prep athletes playing together as a team with good technique, while very rarely making mistakes.

“The Creighton Prep Junior Jays are an extraordinarily well-coached defensive team:
It is the best defensive team I have seen this year!

But are the Junior Jays the best team in Class A?”

Millard West: Best Team In Class A

Today, for the first time this season,  I have to answer, “No.  Millard West is the best team in Class A.”  The Wildcats have very good team speed and they have the most balanced team on offense and defense in Class A . This unique combination gives Millard West the ability to score bunches of points and/or to shut a team down.

Fortunately, polls are meaningless right now.  Even though Hit News considers Millard West to be the best team in Class A–Omaha North, Creighton Prep and Millard South feild very good  teams that are all capable of beating the Wildcats–this is a very balanced final four.

There is no way I will make a prediction on the Millard West vs. Omaha North or the Creighton Prep vs. Millard South game–heck, I still can’t even decide on which one to attend.  But I still stand by my pre-playoff prediction that we won’t have two unbeaten teams in the finals.

    Could I be wrong again?

OK!  Try your hand at picking the winner of each Class A semi-final game:

Nebraska HS Playoff Upset Forecasted: Bellevue West Defeats Millard West

#9 Bellevue West VS #1 Millard West

The Bellevue West Thunderbirds enter their quartefinal playoff game game against the Millard West Widcats coming off an emotional last minute 30-28 come from behind victory over the Burke Bulldogs, in last week’s opening round game.  Conversely, the  Wildcat’s showup this Friday after a playoff record breaking 77-0 trouncing of Omaha Northwest.

So how does the way that the T-Birds and the Cats handled their opponents last week portend to the outcome of their battle this week?

Answer: Simply that one team will be playoff battle tested for this quarterfinal match up while the other team will be well rested–that’s all!

However,  the biggest factor to take a look at in attempting to predict the outcome of this game is figuring out how these two teams match up against each other:

The T-Birds have faced some good running teams and some decent passing teams this year, but they have yet to face a highly balanced and efficient offensive team like Millard West that can both run and pass very well.   Millard West QB Nate Hauptman, may not throw as much as Seals but he is as accurate.  And when Hauptman is not throwing, he always has the luxury of handing off the ball to speedy 1,000 yard RB Kohlman Adema-Schulte.   However, Bellevue West’s much improved defense led by their talented senior DB Brent Webb has shown the ability to slow down some very good offensive teams.

The Cats have yet to face a passing attack like that of the T-Birds, especially one that only gets more productive as they get in rhythm running their no-huddle offense designed to have their opponent playing on their heels–while gasping for breath.

The T-Birds’ Tyler Seals and Greg Hardin are the best pass-catch tandem in Nebraska high school history, but they will not be the team’s only offensive weapons on the field, as Evan Herring (third leading receiver in Class A)  provides another ideal target for Seals. The T-Birds also have  a formidable running attack featuring speedy David Hernandez and a dose or two of Webb.

The Cats have one of the best defenses in the state but their biggest defensive weapon this week may be the weather as it is forecastto be in the 30’s by game time.  Cold weather can wreck havoc on any offense, but even more so on a highly pass oriented  team like the T-Birds.

Though Millard West is undefeated and the T-Birds have lost three games–there is no other visable marker to say that the Cats are a better team than Bellevue West.  Therefore,  to predict the outcome of this game I will rely on the visable and intangible differnces between the two teams: Seals and Hardin have proven themselves to be very talented tough competitors and difference-makers. I look for both of them and the rest of their teammates to find ways to be prepared and ready for the elements and the essence of the moment on Friday night.   That and home field advantage is the only edge that seprates these two teams.

Hit News Game Forecast: The weather will be cold!  But–on their home feild–the T-Birds aggressive defense will slow down the Cats highly potent offense just enough to allow Seals and company to heat up the scoreboard with the higher tally of points by the end the game.  Thereby, handing Millard West an untimely first defeat of the season.

#7 Grand Island (6-3)  VS  #10 Lincoln Southwest (5-4)

Game 7

This is one of four rematches to be played in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Islanders won the regular season bout 28-14. But they better not go into this game over confident as Lincoln Southwest has improved since they last met Grand Island in the fourth game of the season.

The Silver Hawks  dual threat QB Rylan Cotton seems to be coming into his own and the defense is also showing signs of improvement.

The good news for the Islanders is their 1,000 yard rusher Curtis Hudiburgh and home field advantage.   This game is a tossup.

Islanders’
Keys To victory

Silver Hawks’
Keys To victory

The Islanders will be leaning heavily on RB Curtis Hudiburgh to carry them to victory, as well as WR Nathaniel  Zook, while QB Logan Almond controls the offense. On defense the Islanders must look to contain Cotton both on the ground and in the air. So they will need to keep an eye on his favorite target Tompkins. Rylan Cotton looms big in this contest. As he goes so too will the Silver Hawks. Fortunately,  he will have a lot of help behind him from RBs Jeff Seybold and Grant Peterson. In addition, Cotton can also turn to Ethan Tompkins, who is one of the best pass catching TEs in Nebraska. The Silver Hawks’ defense must stop  Hudiburgh on the ground and watch for the Almond to Zook hookup through the air.

#15 Fremont (3-6) VS  #2 Creighton Prep (9-0)

Game 8

Last but not least: Game eight features Hit News’ No. 1 rated Creighton Jr. Jays, who have led our poll from preseason through the end of regular season. They should continue–barring any miracle bestowed upon Fremont–to hold the No. 1 spot after this game. But this should be the last game this year that the Junior Jays will not have to play at their absolute best for the full 60 minutes or more.

Tigers’

Junior Jays’

The Tigers can only hope to catch Prep on an awfully bad day and at the same time they must play their best ball of the year.Perhaps head coach Kevin Meyer and/or a member of his staff can come up with some inspiring pregame speech that will lead his team to greatness. Alex Hook just needs to do what he has been doing all season–run the offense to win games. He has some great options at his disposal–his own feet and arm or by handing it off to JR RB phenom Nick Mizaur or SR Brad Heldt. And with blocking from  huge  D-1 prospects Jon Lechner, Scott Criss and Jeff Uher he should be successful with any option he chooses. The Junior Jays defense may be the best in the state. Not only do they have a great d-line they also have a very fine defensive backfield led by pick artist Jake Efferding.

#5 Kearney VS #12 Westside
(Game3)

#13 Papillion-La Vista South VS #4 Omaha North
(Game 4)

#5 Kearney (6-3)  VS  #12 Omaha Westside (5-4)

Game 3

This is an interesting game as both the Bearcats and the Warriors are hard teams to figure out. I mean you just never have a feel for what team is going to show up when either one of these two teams plays. But this is an elimination game, so both teams had better be ready to play thier best football of the year on both sides of the ball for the full 60 minutes of the game.

Don’t get me wrong–whoever  wins this game is still capable of reaching Lincoln and carrying home a championship trophy. It’s all about who can get hot and stay that way for four games in a row at this time of the year!

Other than the fact that Bearcat head coach Brandon Cool is one of the best coaches in the state,  I don’t know much about this season’s  Bearcat team except their seemingly erratic perfromances and their number one RB Vinny Molina, who is also one of the state’s fastest sprinters.

Kearney better hope that Molina doesn’t cramp up (as is the usual case) in this game because they will need a full night’s work from him to get by the Warriors.

The Warriors need  good performances from both QB Ron Kellogg and RB Willie Metoyer for them to pull this one out.

Kearney will be tough to beat at home!

Bearcats’
Keys To victory

Warriors
Keys To victory

The Bearcats will need to be multi-dimensional–with the run and the pass; convert third downs and avoid turnovers.

Defensively, the Bearcats need to contain the Warrior’s  elusive Willie Metoyer and keep pressure on Ronald Kellogg.

RB Willie Metoyer and QB Ron Kellogg need to play to their potential in order to avoid an early exit from the playoffs. Of course they will only be as successful as their O-line, who will have their hands full with a scrappy and aggressive Bearcat defense.

On defense the Warriors will need to contain Molina and the other RBs while also guarding against the Bearcats’ aerial attack.

Key Players To Watch

Warriors’
Key Players To Watch

Ron Kellogg, QB; Willie Metoyer, RB, LB; Dakota McCormack, LB, TE.

#13 Papillion-La Vista South (5-4)  VS  #4 Omaha North  (8-1)

Game 4

A rematch game that saw Omaha North barely squeak by the Titans in a 28-21 slug out just two weeks ago. Michael Burrus pounded the Viking defense for  311 rushing yards that night to no avail as his team still came up short where it counted the most–scoreboard.

That game also saw the return from injury of starting Viking QB Steve Veith, who helped to guide a fairly balanced running and passing attack. Veith is a key cog in the Vikings high output offense–his absence in the Burke game, due to a previous injury, played a major factor in the Vikings only loss of the season.

After dissecting the film of their recent contest, both coaching staffs should have their A games ready for this Friday night’s playoff elimination game. Look for another close contest.

The fans should be treated to seeing  the performances  of two of the top running backs in the state in the form of the Titans’ Michael Burrus (1, 663 rushing yards) and the Vikings’ Bryant Giles (1, 238  rushing yards).

Vikings’

The Titans could benefit by diversifying their offensive strategy with a few more passing plays. make sure to capitalize on Burrus’ pass catching abilities. They also must convert more on third downs and limit turnovers. On the defensive side of the ball, The Titans must limit Giles’ big play capability by not over pursuing on plays and taking proper angles to the ball. The key to success here is a very aggressive and punishing defense capable of producing some turnovers. Oh yea! and now you know that Veith can pass so be ready. Omaha North should play this game by the motto “if it ain’t broke don’t try to fix it.” Just rely on Veith to run the offense and count on the lightning and thunder backfield combo of Bryant Giles and Ronald Coleman to deliver the goods behind a strong O-line anchored by D-1 prospect  James Davis.Defensively, the Vikings must do a better job of containing Michael Burrus and they must watch out for an improving Titan passing attack.

Millard West VS Omaha Northwest (Game 1)

Bellevue West VS Omaha Burke (Game 2)

Hit News @ Hit Highlights

#1 Millard West (9-0)  VS  #16 Omaha Northwest (2-7)

Game 1

First off: Congrats to Northwest for making the playoffs for the first time in 16 years. Hopefully, in the near future, this will encourage more school participation in the sport.Unfortunately, this game should provide an opportunity for Millard West to rest up some of their key players after a half or so of play.

Wildcats’
Keys To victory

Huskies’
Keys To victory

Nebraska’s fastest sprinter, Kohlman Adema Schulte, and a very accurate QB in Nate Hauptman should inflict enough damage to seal the deal.

Stop the Huskies run game featuring Antaries Daniels and do your thing on offense and you should have things well in hand by halftime.

Don’t get over confident—anything is possible.  That’s why they play the game.

The line must block for Antaries Daniels—we may never see how good this kid really is due to the Huskies perennial inequities up front–they need some beef on the line!

The defense must find a way to stop the Wildcats’ well balanced offensive attack. Good luck with that task!

#9 Bellevue West (6-3)  VS  #8 Omaha Burke (7-2)

Game 2

The game is a rematch between two pretty evenly matched teams. Their first game was tied 21 all late into the fourth quarter when the Thunderbirds reached into their bag of tricks with a long and perfectly executed hook and ladder play for the winning TD.

This is not the most desirable match-up for the Bulldogs as they seem to struggle most against teams that can throw the ball– the Thunderbirds’ with QB Tyler Seals and WR Greg Hardin leading the charge are the best passing team in the history of Nebraska high school football. And just when you think you are stopping the pass, out pops the Thunerbirds’ dangerously shifty David Hernandez on his way towards a long scamper.

Just as dangerous as Seals’ arm is when he throws the ball, dual-threat Burke QB Jimmie Forsythe’s lightning quick feet are just as lethal to opposing teams when he is on the run. In addition:  Kelvin Johnson, a power runner with speed; Reggie Bush–I mean Stephon Washinton and the blazzing Jake Marousek combine to provide the most explosive backfield in the state.

It will be a tall task for both defenses to contain one another.

The weather may play a key part in deciding this one:The colder and nastier the better it may be for the Dawgs. A nice calm night–as is forcasted–may be problematic for the Bulldogs unless their improving secondary steps up another notch or two.

High school football fans wishing to see some of the best skill players in the state–Don’t miss your chance to attend this game!

Thunderbirds’
Keys To Victory

Bulldogs’
Keys To Victory

Bulldogs are vulnerable against the pass–exploit their weakness and limit turnovers, while using the pass to set up the run.

Defensively Bellevue West needs to contain Forsythe like they did in the first meeting. At the same time the Thunderbirds can’t lose focus on all of Burke’s other weapons like Jake Marousek, Kelvin Johnson, and Stephon Washington and Lavant Moore.

That is a big “if ” with all those weapons at Burke’s  disposal.  But containing Forsythe will start the Thunderbirds in the right direction towards victory.

If the Thunderbirds can play defensively like they did in the first half of their previous game againt the Bulldogs–it could be a long night  for Burke.

Burke must limit penalties (they rank among the most penalized teams in Class A) and turnovers. The line and the backs  must  pick up the Thunerbirds’ constant blitzing attack and/or find a way to exploit it.  Most importantly,  Forsythe must trust his arm and his feet to deliver a team victory.

The defensive line and/or scheme must find a way to pressure Seals and defensive playmakers like  Jack SaxtonChris Lucido and Nate Anderson must play big. Don’t overlook the slashing speedster David Hernandez, who will burn you as quick as Seals’ arm.

Bulldogs’

Playoff Time: The Moment Of Truth!

OK! Throw out the rankings and the regular season records—now it all comes down to one elimination game at a time.

They say “you are what you are.”  The meaning in this case: A team’s record is a reflection of its talents and flaws and a strong indicator of its potential playoff performance. But unusual and unexpected things—sometimes—occur during this time of the year when the weather is cold and expectations are high and nerves are on end.  And in this year’s playoff bracket with every team, save Omaha Northwest and Fremont (sorry guys), having a realistic chance of winning every game they play—we could see more than our fair share of unexpected outcomes. Unless, of course, you believe that undefeated Creighton Prep and Millard West are superior teams headed on an inevitable collision  course pitting Nebraka’s top 2 ranked Class A teams against one another in the state finals.

Creighton Prep vs. Millard West would be a great final, and based on their regular season records and performances, a game that should happen. However, the strength of the Class A bracket suggests to me that one– if not both–of these teams will not reach Lincoln. On the other hand, if I am wrong, what a game it would be!

Vote below for the best undefeated HS football team in Nebraska.

Hit News @ Hit Highlights

Creighton Prep Still On Top

Going into the last week of the season, Creighton Prep keeps a tight grip on the  No. 1 spot in  Hit News’ Top Ten Nebraska High School Football Team rankings.

The Junior Jays have held the No. 1 spot since the beginning of the season.  And they solidified their hold on the top spot with last Friday’s convincing win over a very good Bellevue West squad.

Sure! There is another 8-0 team in Nebraska that some think is the true No. 1, but for now–it looks like the Millard West Wildcats will have to prove that point in the playoffs.  However, even after the Class A playoffs are over, the debate over who is the real No. 1 team in Nebraska may not be settled.

McCook: The Best Nebraksa HS Football Team?

This year Class B’s McCook may truly be the best high school football team in the state!  I just wish that  we could see them play a Class A team to find out how good they really are.  If Elkhorn’s (7-2) success in Class A, after moving up this year from Class B, is any indication of how good Class B football really is–then an undefeated Class B Champion McCook would have a real good case in claiming to be 2008’s best Nebraska high school football team.

Working in McCook’s favor for claiming the best team in the state title is a Class A playoff bracket featuring at least a dozen teams that are capable of getting hot enough to make it to Lincoln and win the whole enchilada. It’s quite possible that this year’s Class A champion may have at least a blemish or two or three on their record.

Of course, the above scenario would mean that both–undefeated–Class A teams Creighton Prep and Millard West would have to lose somewhere along the way. Hmm!   Stranger things have happened.

If the Class A champion is not an undefeated team and Mcook continues its devastation of their opponents throughout the playoffs–they have every right to claim the mythical No.1 2008 Nebraska HS Football Team title–at least they would get our vote!

    Let the debate begin!
